We are now hours away from holding our state's primary election to nominate our Democratic Attorney General candidate. But, as is all too unfortunately common, we have witnessed a degeneration of our election process into bickering and a blitz of attack ads between Kamala Harris and Chris Kelly. I don't know about you, but I'm tired of it.

For the first time in our state's history, the government spent more money on prisons than higher education. Yet, our state oversees a revolving door prison system - where 70 percent of released inmates return after three years.

These are the salient problems that candidates for Attorney General should be attacking. Yet, all you have to do is turn on your television or get on the Internet to see that Harris and Kelly are more interested in attacking each other.

While Harris blogs about lunch with supermodel Tyra Banks and Kelly touts pumping $13 million of his own money into the election, they run the risk of ignoring what is really important for police, firefighters, teachers and working families.

This election should focus on the people and future of California. This election should be about figuring out the best way to make our state safer, fixing our revolving door prison system and, as I wish to do, making education a civil right for all Californians.

I believe a stronger California starts with great schools, not failed prisons. That is why I have garnered the largest coalition of public safety and education groups - from the California Police Chiefs Association and California Professional Firefighters to the California Federation of Teachers and California Faculty Association.

I want voters to know that they have a better choice than just two bickering politicians.

Voters have the choice to ignore the negative campaigning and join police, firefighters, teachers and thousands of other Democrats throughout California who believe that education is key to safety and cast your vote this Tuesday for Alberto Torrico for Attorney General.
